Education and Writing Experience
Cockerham graduated from Ferrum College with a bachelor's degree in International Studies and Russian. During college she served as editor of The Passport, International Studies newsletter.
After college Cockerham worked for Information Inc., an online news service. She wrote abstracts of articles of interest to the company's clients. She worked on the daily IBM and international finance accounts as well as several weekly accounts on various subjects. After two years, she switched to print journalism.
Cockerham joined the Maryland Independent when it was owned by Chesapeake Publishing and she started as a government reporter. Within 9 months, she was promoted to editor of the Community section. Cockerham earned Chesapeake Publishing's Excellence Award and shared a MDDC award for team coverage of the La Plata tornado.
Personal Details
A married, stay-at-home mom to three children, Cockerham focuses on her family first. She and her husband have been married for more than a decade. She has a variety of interests and loves to collect free magazine subscriptions and find free items online. She can usually be found in the kitchen or at the YMCA.
